A 2-year-old Texas boy fatally shot himself in the face with a handgun belonging to his father — who was arrested on a homicide charge for the tragic accident, according to reports Monday.
Eric Morales, 22, allegedly set the loaded gun on a kitchen table at his home Corpus Christi on Sunday morning and left house, police sources told the local news station Kristv.com.
The toddler, Ryan Morales, was playing with the firearm when he stared down the barrel and squeezed the trigger, police said.
The child, who was home with his mother and 1-year-old sibling at the time, was rushed to a hospital with bullet wound to the eye and died shortly after, according to the station.
Morales was charged with criminally negligent homicide. He was being held on a $50,000 bond at Nueces County jail Monday.
The toddler was “a very curious” and affectionate boy, Amanda Ramos, his aunt, told the Corpus Christi Times.
“Ryan was an awesome kid,” she said. “He loved his mommy and daddy and he loved his little brother.”
Friends of the family set up a web page on the crowd-sourcing site Gofundme.com to help pay for the boy’s funeral.
